A recent study revealed some surprising insights into the world of corporate jargon. The most annoying word for Gen Z? “Vibe.” Meanwhile, everyone seems to want to “eliminate” the phrase “circle back.”
The study, which surveyed over 1,000 Americans, found that over a quarter of respondents hear corporate buzzwords multiple times a day. But it’s not just annoying, it’s also pervasive. 58% of Americans admit to using buzzwords in their personal lives!
So, what are the top offenders? “Like a family” is the most-hated term in job postings, while “FYI” takes the cake outside of work. Interestingly, only 11% of people use “on my radar” in their personal lives.
Where are these buzzwords lurking? Emails, in-person conversations, and instant messages seem to be the prime suspects.
And the award for least annoying corporate jargon goes to… “sync.”
But it’s not all bad news. The study also found that people dislike phrases like “fast-paced environment”, “hustle”, and “work hard, play hard” in job postings. Snappy job titles like “rockstar” and “guru” are also on the outs.
The study’s most intriguing finding? The most annoying new buzzword is “new normal,” highlighting our collective weariness with the pandemic’s impact on everyday life.
This study serves as a valuable reminder to be mindful of our language, both in and out of the office. By being aware of the most common buzzwords and avoiding overusing them, we can improve our communication and build stronger professional relationships.
